The audio release of an Ilayathalapathy movie always carries tremendous expectations. Fans want to know how the audio is, and how it fares. Critics want to know what Vijay has come up with this time. All other people want to know what the hype about Pokkiri, is ALL ABOUT!
Anyways, lets get into this review of Pokkiri, the movie of which is expected to release on Jan 12th, 2007.In this review, the reviewer (me) will be reviewing the songs purely as a Vijay fan.
fan….
1. Aadungada Enna Suththi - Naveen
What an opening song??? The best ever that I have listened to in recent times…. Yes yes, the song bears heavy resemblance to previous tunes (some popular Ilayaraja numbers). the feel is heavily ilayaraja and TR style, but bear this in mind, Vijay’s fans are going to create a furore in the theatres…. Howlings of “Once More” is going to echo all across the theatre hall and it could be a problem at many places for the theatre owners. If Prabudeva dances for this one, thats IT! cant even imagine the fate of the theatres.
Naveen has smashed a double six with this song. I havent heard much of Naveen, but he has hit the ball out of the stadium. So much sincerity in his voice, and fits the bill more than perfectly. The chorus is superb, but one man deserves the best of accolades – MANISHARMA. His usage of instruments is AWESOME. In fact, I rate him one of the best in the usage of instruments.
Rating: 100/10
Should be the best opening song for Vijay in recent times. If Prabudeva combines with Vijay for this song, sollave vendam (need not say at all!)
2. Vasantha Mullai – Rahul Nambiyar, V Krishnamurthy
“Vasantha Mullai, pole vandhu, aadudhe pen purra….”. Lovely song! The lyrics are from an old movie, but the song sounds really new. The catchy lyrics in between like “Appo gaana thaan pudikkume, ippo melody’um pudikkudhe” and “kushi iduppa mattum parthavan” sound catchy. Again, the usage of the dholak and the tabla in between is worth mentioning. Catchy on the first listen itself, its bound to grow on you further and further as you listen to it
Rating: 9.5/10
3. Thamizh Thamizh – Ranjith, Swetha
A super cool melody song…. On the first listen, the remix sounded better to me. May be because I am a fast beats lover. But after a few listenings, I am completely hooked to the slower version. Ranjith does a very good job. He is an excellent singer. Not heard of Swetha much. The rap in between the song is in sync with Vijay’s recent films having such raps in the songs. This one however, sounds really good and better among the recent ones.
P.s: Same review for remix!
Rating: 8/10
4. Dol Dol Thaan – Suchitra, Ranjith
This was my favorite song in the Telugu version!!! I used to listen to it 4-5 times a day. I thought the Tamil version wont match up to the original. SInce I was used to that lyrics. But surprisingly, the Tamil version more than matches up to the original. Suchitra retains the same feel of the original version, PERFECTLY in this song. Ranjith is amazingly the same as he was in the original. The original had pre-dominantly Hindi lyrics. They seem to have changed it for this one and it sounds better for the Tamil audience. Not much to review about since its the same track from telugu, other than that its an awesome track
Rating: 10/10
5. En Chella Peru Apple – Suchitra, AV Ramanan
Surprisingly, this song sounds really good to me. I did not give much interest to this song when it came in the Telugu version. They have used the same tune for this Tamil version featuring Mumait Khan and Ilayathalapathy. I am just amazed at Suchitra’s talent. She doesnt let up at any place. She just plain ROCKS! She is turning out to be superb these days. AV Ramanan is barely hearable as he sings a few lines. Good funky music by Manisharma
Rating: 7/10
6. Maambazham – Shankar Mahadevan, Ganga
As with others, this is the least liked song for me, of the album. Shankar Mahadevan is in his usual self and Ganga gives him decent support. But its just that the song doesnt impress you that easily. This sounds clearly a picturisation song where the song can be a hit if its picturised well. Not an instant attraction unlike the others. Manisharma reiterates that he is second to none when it comes to using instruments, by the way he starts off the song with the tabla!
Rating: 5.5/10
7. Pokkiri Theme (Yuthamae) – Manisharma
Another song taken from the Telugu version. But this one just has bits of the original version from the Telugu Pokkiri. This is reportedly the BGM of the movie and is expected to linger in our minds way after the movie ends. And this has been aptly tuned in an astonishing manner by Manisharma. Considering the mass status that Vijay enjoys, this theme music will perfectly fit Vijay in the movie. After coming out of the movie, the fans are going to remember Vijay and this BGM tune.
Rating: 10/10
Overall: The album has everything in it to please everybody. The so called “A” class audience have Thamizh Thamizh, Pokkiri theme and Dole Dole to listen to, the masses would just tear the roof with “Aadungada”, “Maambazham” and “En Chella Peru Apple”, Vasantha Mullai falls somewhere in between where both the classes and the masses would like this particular song. All in all, the song are set to appeal to all types of audience. The theatres have to gear up for the opening mass kuthu song “Aadungada” as the theatres are going to reverberate with noise when the song is played on screen! Waiting for Prabudeva to showcase his dancing skills with Vijay in this particular song!
